    Why students choose KMOU.

    A Specialized Maritime National University

KMOU is a national university with a clear maritime and ocean identity, shipping, logistics, ocean engineering, maritime law and marine technology sit at the centre of campus life.

    Coastal Campus on Yeongdo

The main campus is in Dongsam-dong on Yeongdo, near the Achi Island area. A strong coastal feel, and a quieter, more campus-oriented atmosphere than PNU or Kyungsung-PKNU.

Start at the OIA in Building D8

Every international first step, ARC, insurance, dormitory, Student ID, Korean class, coordinator routing, runs through the Office of International Affairs in the International Exchange & Cooperation Building (D8).

    The Reality Check

No subway on campus, the bus and taxi plan matters from day one.

KMOU is on Yeongdo, not next to a subway station. From Gimhae Airport, the practical route is Light Rail → Sasang → bus #8 toward Taejongdae / Korea Maritime University, then off at 해양대입구. Bus #190 is especially useful because it enters the campus. With luggage, take a taxi for the last leg. Also: don't confuse KMOU with Mokpo National Maritime University, the official English name is Korea Maritime & Ocean University.

“Please take me to the main gate of Korea Maritime & Ocean University.”

    Programs

A national university built around the sea.

KMOU is a specialized national university covering maritime sciences, ocean science and engineering, ship engineering, shipping and logistics, maritime law, international trade and economics, coast guard studies, AI / cyber security connected with maritime fields, plus maritime humanities and social sciences. A strong match if your future connects with the sea, ships, ports, logistics, marine industries, ocean technology or maritime policy.

    Academic Fields

For regular degree study, always check the language of instruction up front, do not assume many courses are taught in English. KMOU has three undergraduate colleges, 해사대학 (maritime sciences), 해양과학기술융합대학 (ocean science and technology convergence) and 해양인문사회과학대학 (ocean humanities and social sciences). There is no medical or nursing college, so the fee brackets you will meet are engineering, natural sciences, arts and physical education, and humanities and social sciences.

    Language of Instruction

Korean-first for most degree study, with KLI as the language pathway.

KMOU's own eligibility rules make the Korean requirement concrete. To apply for undergraduate international admission you need TOPIK level 3, or completion of a level 3 course at a university-run Korean language institute, at the time of application, and TOPIK level 4 or above before you can graduate. The KMOU Korean Language Institute (한국어교육원) runs the formal Korean pathway, 10 weeks, 200 hours, Monday to Friday 09:00 to 12:50. Specific TOPIK-prep classes should be checked on the latest KLI notice. KIIP classes are not confirmed.

    Admissions

Start at D8, KMOU uses different contacts for each route.

The official page for international undergraduate applicants is Admissions > Undergraduate on the Office of International Affairs site, https://www.kmou.ac.kr/global/cm/cntnts/cntntsView.do?mi=470&cntntsId=1693. It carries the eligibility rules, the document list, the process flow and the office contacts. The dated 모집요강 (admission guidelines) for each intake are posted separately on the Notice (Admissions & GKS) board, https://www.kmou.ac.kr/global/na/ntt/selectNttList.do?mi=4448&bbsId=10001622, so check both. Core eligibility as published: the applicant and both parents must be foreign nationals, you need 12 years of prior schooling, and you need TOPIK level 3 or completion of a level 3 course at a university-run Korean language institute at the time of application, with TOPIK level 4 or above required before graduation. KMOU still uses separate contacts for undergraduate admission, graduate admission, exchange, Korean language study, dormitory and student support, so start with the Office of International Affairs in the International Exchange & Cooperation Building (D-8), 1F, and ask for the coordinator for your route.

    Tuition, as currently published

KMOU's official fee table is the 계열별등록금내역 page inside the Student Service System, under 등록안내. It publishes per-semester amounts for 2026학년도 신입생 (2026 entering students) and it splits out-of-quota international students (정원 외 외국인) into two brackets, a 일반과정 general course and a 특별과정 special course, at markedly different prices. All amounts are KRW only, KMOU publishes no USD equivalent.

Dormitory management fees and the optional meal plans are billed separately, see the Housing tab. KMOU publishes no USD figures and no admission-fee line on this table.

    Program Per semester Notes
International, general course (정원 외 외국인 일반과정): Engineering 공학 KRW 2,248,000 2026학년도 신입생, per semester

Checked on 3 August 2026 against KMOU's own 계열별등록금내역 table for 2026학년도 신입생. The most important caveat: KMOU publishes the 일반과정 and 특별과정 international rates side by side without defining which one applies to a given applicant, and the gap is large, KRW 1,124,000 a semester in engineering. Confirm your bracket in writing with the Office of International Affairs before you budget or sign anything. Two other KMOU pages are not usable references, the English Tuition and Fees page on the international site was displaying 컨텐츠 준비중 입니다, content coming soon, and the admissions-site 등록금 page was still showing 2025학년도. KMOU has no medicine or nursing college, so the only brackets that apply are engineering, natural sciences, arts and physical education, and humanities and social sciences.

    Scholarships

Be careful with this section, and read the award column rather than the scheme names. KMOU's admissions site names four in-house scholarships but publishes no amounts, no percentages and no statement of whether international students are eligible for them. We looked for a TOPIK-based automatic entry scholarship or fee reduction, the kind several Busan universities advertise, and found none anywhere on KMOU's official site. Do not assume one exists.

Global Korea Scholarship, GKS-U (Embassy Track)

Korean government scholarship. Terms are set by NIIED, not by KMOU.

For the 2026 GKS-U cycle, KMOU's own notice states that all applicants who wish to apply to KMOU must apply only through the Embassy Track. Online application through the Korean diplomatic mission ran 15 to 30 September 2025.

First-round screening is done by the Korean diplomatic mission and no documents go to the university, with one exception: applicants to 해사대학, the College of Maritime Sciences, must send a Seafarer's Medical Certificate directly to KMOU.

    특전장학금, entrance-score scholarship

    Information being verified

Awarded on entrance examination score. KMOU's admissions site names the scheme but publishes no amount, no percentage and no statement of international-student eligibility.

    성적장학금, academic merit scholarship

    Information being verified

Awarded on GPA once you are enrolled. Named on KMOU's admissions site with no amount and no threshold published.

    가족장학금, family scholarship

    Information being verified

Family-based scheme. Named on KMOU's admissions site with no amount and no eligibility detail published.

    다솜장학금, Dasom scholarship

    Information being verified

Awarded on financial circumstances. Named on KMOU's admissions site with no amount and no eligibility detail published.

    Global Korea Scholarship

GKS at KMOU is confirmed, and the track matters. KMOU participates in the Global Korea Scholarship, and for the 2026 GKS-U cycle the university's own notice is explicit: all applicants who wish to apply to Korea Maritime & Ocean University must apply only through the Embassy Track, following the restructuring of the former Regional University Track (R-GKS). Online application through the Korean diplomatic mission ran 15 to 30 September 2025. First-round screening is handled by the mission and no documents go to KMOU, except that applicants to 해사대학, the College of Maritime Sciences, must send a Seafarer's Medical Certificate directly to the university. KMOU had previously run a University Track guideline, posted 19 September 2024, so if you find that older document, note that the University Track is not the current route. KMOU also publishes a GKS 정부초청 외국인 장학생 규정 및 서식 안내, a rules and forms guide, dated 2 September 2025.

Checked on 3 August 2026. No accessible official KMOU page publishes an international-student scholarship list with a name, a benefit and a condition together. The 교내장학금 page carries its table as an image plus two PDFs served from a directory that KMOU's robots.txt blocks, so we could not read the amounts and we will not guess them. Ask 국제교류원, the Office of International Affairs, on +82-51-410-5176 or iadm@kmou.ac.kr, or 학생복지과, student welfare, on 051-410-4029, before you rely on any scholarship figure. Our education partners can also chase this for you.

    Typical application windows

One structural point first, because it changes how you plan. KMOU's Fall intake for international students is transfer entry only, 편입생, as the 2026 Fall attachments make clear in their title, 2026학년도 후기 외국인 특별전형 편입생 모집요강. If you are applying as a first-year student you have exactly one entry point per year and it is Spring. Nothing has been published for 2027, so the windows below are read off KMOU's own previous cycles and are a planning aid only.

These 2027 windows are patterns from previous cycles, not confirmed dates. KMOU has published nothing for the 2027 academic year. As of 3 August 2026 the newest item on the Admissions & GKS board was the 2026 Fall transfer guideline, posted 16 April 2026. Remember too that Fall is transfer entry only for international students, so a first-year applicant who misses the Spring window waits a full year. Do not book flights, resign from a job or pay anyone against these windows. Confirm the live dates with the KMOU Office of International Affairs or with our education partners first.

    Intake Window Basis
Spring 2027 (first-year entry, March start) Guideline expected around September 2026. Online application expected around late December 2026, with documents, interview and results following in January 2027. Pattern from KMOU's own 2026 Spring cycle. Not a confirmed date.
Fall 2027 (transfer entry only, September start) Guideline expected around April 2027. Application and documents expected around May 2027, interview late June, decision mid July. Pattern from KMOU's own 2026 Fall transfer cycle. Not a confirmed date.

Last confirmed cycle: Spring 2026, first-year entry: guideline posted 2 September 2025, online application 29 December 2025 09:00 to 31 December 2025 18:00, documents by 5 January 2026 18:00, interview 15 January 2026, results 28 January 2026, registration 29 January to 2 February 2026. Fall 2026, transfer entry: guideline posted 16 April 2026, application and documents 6 May 09:00 to 1 June 2026 18:00, interview 29 June, decision 15 July, registration 16 to 22 July 2026. Use these as your calibration for how the 2027 cycle is likely to run.

The 2026 Spring intake was filed online at www.studyinkorea.go.kr, not on a KMOU portal. Each intake's dated 모집요강 is posted on the Notice (Admissions & GKS) board at https://www.kmou.ac.kr/global/na/ntt/selectNttList.do?mi=4448&bbsId=10001622

    Student Life

    Campus-and-coastal, not a station-strip nightlife crowd.

KMOU's student environment is different from campuses near big subway-station districts. The Dongsam-dong / Hari / Yeongdo area is more residential, coastal and campus-oriented than PNU, Kyungsung-PKNU or Seomyeon-area campuses. There is no big student nightlife district directly beside the campus.

    Clubs & Communities

    • Active maritime, ocean and engineering academic circles
    • International student support through OIA and KLI
    • Sports and gym facilities, university gym (체육관) used for university events

Club rosters and gym access rules change each semester, confirm current circles with the Office of International Affairs on arrival.

    The Student District

For daily food and quick needs, start with Oullim Hall, campus cafés, campus convenience stores and the Hari / Dongsam local streets. For bigger shopping, more cafés or nightlife, take a bus or taxi toward Nampo, Busan Station or other Yeongdo town areas.

Yeongdo also has scenic places, the National Maritime Museum, Taejongdae, and the Huinnyeoul coastal area, good for weekends and photos rather than daily hangouts.

    Daily life still needs Korean

Bus routes, cafeteria menus, housing information, health clinic and welfare notices mostly run in Korean. Papago, Naver Map, KakaoMap and Kakao T cover most everyday gaps.

    On-Campus Dorms

KMOU's 학생생활관 (student residence halls) publish four room types, and a four-person room is not one of them. The official facility list and fee table show 아치관 Achi Hall single rooms (1인실), 아라관 Ara Hall doubles (2인실), 혜초관 Hyecho Hall doubles (2인실, BTL phase 1) and 누리관 Nuri Hall six-person rooms (6인실). The fees below are the 관리비 (management fee) for 2026학년도 2학기, the Fall 2026 semester, calculated on a 116-day basis. Meals at KMOU are a separate optional add-on rather than a compulsory bundle, so a single room with no meal plan is KRW 964,420 for the semester and the same room with three meals a day is KRW 1,828,420. The separate 승선생활관 (Badaro), the residence for maritime cadets, publishes no room types and no fees at all. Dormitory website: https://www.kmou.ac.kr/dorm/main.do

Room Type Fee / Semester Meals
아치관 Achi Hall, single room (1인실) KRW 964,420 Management fee only. Optional meal plans cost extra: 3 meals a day 864,000, 2 a day 686,400, 1.5 a day 584,100, 1 a day 446,600. With three meals a day the total is KRW 1,828,420.
아라관 Ara Hall, double room (2인실) KRW 699,480 Management fee only. Same optional meal plans, KRW 446,600 to 864,000 per semester.
혜초관 Hyecho Hall, double room (2인실, BTL phase 1) KRW 742,280 plus KRW 150,000 utilities (공공요금) Management fee and utilities only. Same optional meal plans, KRW 446,600 to 864,000 per semester.
누리관 Nuri Hall, six-person room (6인실) KRW 763,860 Management fee only. Same optional meal plans, KRW 446,600 to 864,000 per semester. This is the cheapest shared option KMOU publishes.
Four-person room (4인실) Not offered at KMOU KMOU publishes no quad. The nearest equivalent is the six-person room in Nuri Hall above.
승선생활관 Badaro, maritime cadet residence Information being verified KMOU publishes no room-type page and no fee page for this hall. Ask the dormitory office directly if you are entering the College of Maritime Sciences.

Figures come from KMOU's 2026학년도 2학기 dormitory notice, posted on the Office of International Affairs notice board on 3 August 2026 and calculated on a 116-day semester. Two official KMOU pages disagree. The standing 생활관비 fee page was still showing the 2026학년도 1학기 rates when we checked on 3 August 2026, a 115-day basis with the Achi Hall single at 956,110 KRW and meal plans from 466,900 to 891,000 KRW. We publish the newer notice figures. Confirm on arrival. Payment for international and graduate students in the Fall 2026 round ran 7 to 10 August 2026, 13:00 to 23:00, which is a short window and easy to miss. Dormitory administration office (학생생활관 행정지원실): 051-410-4097. Fees are reset every semester, so treat these as the last published rate and not a quote.

    Off-Campus Rent

Practical search areas: Dongsam-dong, Hari, Yeongdo, and bus-access areas toward Nampo or Busan Station. Useful Korean search terms: 한국해양대 원룸, 해양대입구 원룸, 동삼동 원룸, 하리 원룸, 영도 원룸, 국립한국해양대학교 자취방. Use Naver 부동산, 직방, 다방 and local real-estate offices. Always compare deposit, monthly rent and maintenance fee.

Never sign sight-unseen. Use a vetted advisor to conduct a physical room check before sending any deposit.

Dining on Campus: Ara Hall Dining Room and the Oullim Hall Co-op

There are two separate dining systems and it is worth knowing which is which. The dormitory dining hall sits in 아라관 Ara Hall, 2F, seats around 380, and its meals are tied to the paid dormitory meal plan rather than sold per tray. The university co-op runs three outlets in 어울림관 Oullim Hall: the staff dining hall (교직원식당) on 5F with 208 seats, 051-410-5180, a Mom's Touch (맘스터치) on 2F and a snack corner (스낵코너) on 3F. All three co-op outlets are closed at weekends and on public holidays. KMOU does not publish per-meal prices for the co-op outlets, and it publishes no semester-specific timetable for either system, so the hours below are the standing published hours. Around Oullim Hall you will also find cafés, convenience stores, NH (NongHyup) banking, postal service, a bookstore and a multishop. Expect Korean-heavy menus.

    Breakfast (조식)

    08:00 – 09:00

Dormitory dining hall, Ara Hall 2F. One hour only, and it is part of the paid meal plan. The staff dining hall in Oullim Hall 5F also opens at 08:00.

Oullim Hall 5F staff dining hall, between its 10:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 15:00 breaks. Mom's Touch on 2F runs 11:00 to 18:30 with a 15:00 to 16:00 break, and the 3F snack corner runs 11:00 to 14:00. KMOU publishes no lunch time for the dormitory dining hall.

    Libraries & Sports

    • KMOU has a university library with an English site section and Korean library / mobile materials.
    • Older information mentions a 24-hour reading room; more recent temporary-library info lists different hours during renovation/relocation, access can differ by room and period.
    • Useful campus systems and welfare facilities are concentrated in Oullim Hall, Ara Hall, the Industry-Academic Hub and the Student Union Building.

    Around KMOU

KMOU sits in coastal Dongsam-dong on Yeongdo, with the Hari area and other Yeongdo town centres nearby. The atmosphere is residential and campus-focused rather than a busy student strip.

For bigger shopping, more food options and city-centre life, head by bus or taxi toward Nampo, Busan Station and central Busan. Yeongdo's scenic spots, National Maritime Museum, Taejongdae, Huinnyeoul, are good weekend destinations from campus.
